Individual, Family, and Group Counseling Services

HandinHand Counseling Services, LLC, located in Pittsburgh, PA, is dedicated to promoting hope, health, and healing for individuals, families, and groups dealing with everything from day-to-day challenges to more serious mental health concerns. Founded in support of America’s Campaign for Mental Health Awareness, our practice continues to do its part in encouraging and normalizing the helping relationship within the Pittsburgh community.

Individual Counseling

We offer one-on-one counseling with one of our licensed therapists to individuals presenting with problems such as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, compassion fatigue, and trauma, just to name a few. Sessions typically last from 45 to 60 minutes. This process involves a thorough assessment of symptoms, identifying goals, and intervention. Treatment duration varies depending on the individual’s progress and needs.

During your first session we will review our outpatient contract, which details how we provide treatment along with some of the policies and procedures of our office. Once we complete some of the “housekeeping” items, we will have you complete some quick assessments. The first session consists of a significant amount of rapport building and information gathering. It is not uncommon to be nervous during your first session. We are aware that this may be a new process for you and will go at your pace. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions you may have, and it may even be helpful to write your questions down prior to the appointment.

Family Counseling

We offer family counseling for two or more family members to address problems within the family system. Through this process we identify the current structure of the family and the desired structure. We intervene at the identified problem area to assist your family in achieving the desired results. We believe that each member in the family plays an important role and is part of the solution in one way or another, and so one of the ways we intervene is from a solutions-focused approach. Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes. Treatment duration varies depending on the family’s needs.

During the first session we will address some of the “housekeeping items” and then begin to work on specific assessment tools that have proved to be helpful in evaluating your family. There may be sessions where we only meet with certain members of the family if we determine it is necessary. Family sessions can be intense and at times uncomfortable, so we are sure to work with you all to create a safe and open environment.

Group Counseling

We offer group counseling for individuals looking to increase their mental resilience and learn to thrive emotionally and mentally. Group learning points include mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance. Group therapy helps individuals learn coping skills, set healthy boundaries, manage intense emotions and stress, and be focused on the moment. Group therapy can help you get unstuck by bearing witness to the success stories of other members. Groups provide support by showing you that you are not alone in your challenges.

Group therapy focuses on practical and specific skills that are difficult to learn during individual sessions. Since it is distinct from individual counseling, we recommend that all group participants also attend individual counseling.

The DBT Skills Therapeutic Experience

Providing a more intimate, individualized therapeutic experience with Dialectical Behavioral Skills Therapy. This therapy is also a phenomenal collaborator with other treatment modalities such as CBT, CPT, IPSTR, IFS, DNMS, EMDR, etc.

Since all participants are required to have an individual therapist, we require that your individual therapist refer you using the form below.

After you have been referred, we will process your information, and our administrative assistant will contact you directly to get you set up in our system and scheduled for an intake.

Next, you’ll have an appointment with Dana, our DBT skills therapist. During this appointment, Dana will confirm your mental health symptoms and treatment goals and orient you to DBT therapy.
